“Moon Globe” by Midnight Martian uses your iPhone’s camera to
zoom in on the actual moon. The picture
shows details of the terrain, including the names of craters. The app also contains a compass so students
are learning about cardinal direction as well as the moon. The app is free and has great reviews.
“Moon Calendar” by Rivolu Pte Ltd is a weather app that
provides the time for both moonrise and moonset, as well as sunrise and sunset
on any given day during the year. The
app also provides the moon’s elevation and you can choose coordinates of any
location in the world. the use of
geographic coordinates ties this into Social Studies as well as Science. The app is $0.99, but seems well worth the
cost
“NASA Lunar Electric Rover Simulator” by NASA gives students a
look at space exploration. This app
would be used as more of an extension or “extra” activity at the end of the
unit. I would probably make it a free
choice center, but also include a little webquest about the moon’s surface or
real life space missions to the moon.
This app is free, and the fact that it’s created by NASA is means for
the teacher to have confidence in its accuracy and educational value.
